The company was started in a garage by H. P. Harlan in 1931 to supply Eli Lilly & Co. with laboratory animals. Over the years it has evolved, through growth and acquisitions, to become the world’s largest privately held single source of research-related products. The company’s diverse customer base, spread across 30 countries, includes pharmaceutical and biotech companies, universities, government agencies and others.
Over the years, Harlan has expanded its product line from two strains of laboratory animals to more than 250 strains, in addition to manufacturing standard animal and research diets, pet diets and supplies, animal vaccines and research products.
