To promote human health through the performance of the highest quality, ethically conducted, basic and clinical research. This involves engaging in cutting-edge research, developing an infrastructure to ensure that investigators have high quality research support, and encouraging intra-institutional collaborations to increase research productivity.

The IU School of Medicine (IUSM) is the nation's second largest medical school with approximately 1,150 medical students, 990 residents and fellows and 1,160 full-time faculty. It is based in Indianapolis, with eight additional campuses affiliated with IU and five other universities and colleges throughout Indiana. Approximately half of the physicians practicing in Indiana trained at IUSM. For a century, our faculty have cared for the sick and indigent and our graduates are state and national thought leaders in government, industry and the medical profession. IUSM's visionary future includes leadership in the life sciences initiatives that will yield better physicians and better medicine for a new Indiana economy.
The clinical researchers of IUSM are leaders in their fields, dedicated to advancing health care and improving lives. Approximately 1,500 clinical research studies are open at affiliated hospitals including the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana University, Methodist, Wishard Memorial and the Richard L. Roudebush VA hospitals. Numerous satellite clinics serving the greater Indianapolis and central Indiana area further extend our research scope and clinical delivery system.
Federal grants, industrial contracts, foundations, and non-profit organizations support hundreds of active clinical researchers whose projects include Phase I - Phase IV studies. In addition to externally sponsored research, there are a large number of investigator-initiated research projects including investigator-held IND and IDE studies. The types of clinical research, too numerous to mention, represent virtually every medical/surgical specialty. Complementing individual research efforts is one of the most comprehensive electronic medical records systems in the nation, as well as numerous Research Institutes and Centers of Excellence.
Clinical research coordinators assist investigators to ensure that all regulations and guidelines are followed, study enrollment goals are met or exceeded, and study documents are completed promptly and accurately. Five Institutional Review Boards (IRB) ensure that research projects at the Indianapolis campuses are reviewed thoroughly and efficiently.
The Clinical Trials Program (CTP) actively supports researchers in the areas of regulatory and business affairs consultation, marketing, education and policy development. In addition, CTP serves as a single point of contact for corporate sponsors for study placement. Studies posted on its website enhances recruitment, and monthly educational seminars (including a mandated three-day training program for new coordinators) enhances regulatory compliance. Certification in clinical research is encouraged and supported.
